Toin Saneo (洞院実雄)

Saneo TOIN (1219 - October 5, 1273) was a kugyo (court noble) in the early Kamakura period. He was also called Saneo YAMASHINA. It is said that he was born in the Kanin line of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan and was the originator of the Toin family. He was a child of the Grand Minister, Kintsune SAIONJI, and his mother was the wife of Gon Chunagon (a provisional vice-councilor of state), TAIRA no Chikamune. He was a paternal half-brother of Saneuji SAIONJI and others. His children included Kinmune TOIN, Kino OGURA (originator of Ogura family), Kinmori TOIN, Sadakatsu (head of Daigo-ji Temple), Morie (To-ji choja), Jijun (the head priest of Hossho-ji Temple), Kyogokuin Kitsuhi Toin (empress of Emperor Kameyama), Genkimonin Toin Inshi (wife of Emperor Gofukakusa), Emperor Gofukakusa Kishi TOIN (wife of Emperor Fushimi), wife of Motohira KONOE, wife of Mototada TAKATSUKASA, wife of Kinchika SANJO. He was named Yamashina Nyudomae Safu.

He was conferred a peerage in February 1227. After he served as a chamberlain and so on, he was assigned to Kurodo no to (Head Chamberlain) in Konoefu (the Headquarters of the Inner Palace Guards) in March 1236. He became Sangi (councilor) in December 1237. He was appointed to betto (administrator of a Buddhist temple) in April 1238.

He promoted successively, became the Minister of the Palace in December 1257, and became the Minister of the Right in December 1258. His daughter Kitsuhi became the second consort of Emperor Kameyama in March 1261, and became the Minister of the Left in April of the same year. He promoted to juichii (Junior First Rank) in 1262. He resigned his post and retired in April 1263. He became a maternal grandfather of three emperors: Emperor Gouda, Emperor Fushimi and Emperor Hanazono, and had stronger power in the imperial court than the Saionji family which was the head family. He was suddenly taken ill and had a priest's name of Jogaku (or Keigaku) on September 23, 1273. He died at the age of 55 on October 5 of the same year.
